Vacuum decay in quantum field theory

چکیده
We study the contribution to vacuum decay in field theory due to the interaction between the longand short-wavelength modes of the field. The field model considered consists of a scalar field of mass M with a cubic term in the potential. The dynamics of the long-wavelength modes becomes diffusive in this interaction. The diffusive behavior is described by the reduced Wigner function that characterizes the state of the longwavelength modes. This function is obtained from the whole Wigner function by integration of the degrees of freedom of the short-wavelength modes. The dynamical equation for the reduced Wigner function becomes a kind of Fokker-Planck equation which is solved with suitable boundary conditions enforcing an initial metastable vacuum state trapped in the potential well. As a result a finite activation rate is found, even at zero temperature, for the formation of true vacuum bubbles of size M . This effect makes a substantial contribution to the total decay rate.

Kinetic Theory of the Quantum Field Systems With Unstable Vacuum
The description of quantum field systems with meta-stable vacuum is motivated by studies of many physical problems (the decay of disoriented chiral condensate [1], the resonant decay of CP-odd metastable states [2,3], self-consistent model of QGP pre-equilibrium evolution [4], the phase transition problem in the systems with broken symmetry [5] etc). A non-perturbative approach based on the kin...
متن کاملSupersymmetry in the false vacuum
Supersymmetry in the false vacuum. Abstract A metastable state, or a false vacuum, is not an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian in quantum field theory. Its energy density has a non-zero imaginary part equal to its decay width. Therefore, supersymmetry cannot be exact in the false vacuum. We calculate the size of this effect using the path integral approach.

We study the process of vacuum decay in quantum field theory focusing on the stochastic aspects of the interaction between long- and short-wavelength modes. This interaction results in a diffusive behavior of the reduced Wigner function describing the state of long-wavelength modes, and thereby to a finite activation rate even at zero temperature. This effect can make a substantial contribution...
متن کاملRapid Tunneling and Percolation in the Landscape
Motivated by the possibility of a string landscape, we reexamine tunneling of a scalar field across single/multiple barriers. Recent investigations have suggested modifications to the usual picture of false vacuum decay that lead to efficient and rapid tunneling in the landscape when certain conditions are met. This can be due to stringy effects (e.g. tunneling via the DBI action), or by effect...
متن کاملNumerical Aspects of Bubble Nucleation
The effective potential determines the vacuum state of a quantum field theory. When radiative corrections are included or, if one constructs the finite temperature version of field theory the (effective)potential may have two minimum, one of which is lower than the other. The ’higher’ minimum is referred to as the false or metastable vacuum. The global minimum is the true vacuum state of the th...
